 WEEK OF FEBRUARY 11 – 14, 2013

Congratulations to all the Discovery School students who proudly represented our wonderful school in the ABSH Language Arts Festival last on Saturday. We especially salute Anacamila and Sebastian for representing third grade in the Spelling and Ortografia competitions.

We kick off the week with our GRAND MAYAN MUSEUM! We thank all the parents who have helped our students prepare for their much awaited event (costume, food to bring and share on Monday).  Our Mayan exhibit begins at 8:15 and will end at 9:40 a.m. We hope you can join us!

During this week, we will be working on the following:

v      Math: we wrap up chapter 9 by reviewing the geometric concepts and vocabulary, and by playing a class JEOPARDY GEOMETRY game. The test will be on Tuesday, February 19.
v      Theme: we begin our Science Unit on Chemistry this Tuesday. We will be using our senses to explore 5 unknowns substances.
v      Spelling: lesson 23 /Days of the Week and Time Words/. The quiz will be on Thursday.
v      Handwriting: letter V and W in cursive
v      R/W Workshop: . Please remember that the packet for Charlotte’s Web and the novel are due on Monday, February 11. We will continue with our descriptive writing unit, this week writing about our favorite places based on the reading of Ms. Rumphius by Barbara Cooney (winner of the American Book of the Month and the New York Times Book of the Year.) To enhance our descriptive writing the third graders will also be learning more about adjectives. Here is a digital version of Ms. Rumphius that you and your family may enjoy watching:

This Thursday we will be issuing our MIDTERM REPORTS for the third quarter. Along with them, each student will take his/her MAP REPORTS for the second semester, as well as an  IXL performance report for their work last month. Please review these documents carefully! If you would like a conference, and one has not been requested, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Thursday is VALENTINE’S DAY! We have planned some activities for our students, including watching the 2006 version of the movie Charlotte’s Web (for those who turn in their novels and packets on the established date).  If your child is planning on bringing Valentine’s Day cards or treats, please make sure that they have one for every student in our classes (there are 25 third graders) (This is voluntary!)
