WEEK OF FEBRUARY 4-8, 2013
It is wonderful to see how our third graders continue to
learn, grow and have fun in class. The MAP tests are giving us good information
on what each child needs for the remaining of the school year, and we are eager
to share both the results and plans with the parents. Our final MAP assessment
for Language Usage will be this Friday, February 8 (3B will take it on from
8:30-9:45 a.m. and 3A will take it from 10:10-11:30 a.m.) Please let us know if
you have any questions about these assessments or results.
THE MAYAN MUSEUM will be held on Monday,
February 11, from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m. Parents are welcome to come and support
their child, as well as to listen to their explanations about the Mayan
Civilization. Please ask your child whether he/she needs assistance in
materials for their group model, how they will “dress”, and what they will be
volunteering to bring to share on the day of the museum for “Mayan Food” for
our visitors. Cameras and relatives are welcome too!
This week we will be working on the following:
Ø Math: we will learn about perimeter,
area and volume. Please make sure that skills R.7, R.9 and R.15 on IXL
are practiced this week (they are part of the homework) as well as
additional practice for the multiplication and division facts. (We are checking who is practicing their
skills!)
Ø Theme: continue working on the Mayan
City Models and rehearsing the presentations for February 11.
Ø
Spelling:
lesson 22 is about homophones. The quiz will be this Friday. Note: some of
our third graders are given the option for a more challenging list of weekly
words if they “test out” in the weekly pre-test on Mondays (getting them all
right or just missing one word). Let your teacher know if you want your child
to receive a challenging list if he/she is not opting for one on his/her own.
Ø R/W Workshop: we will begin our
Descriptive Writing unit this week, and our third graders will do some
independent reading. They are eager to emjoy the last book in the Sarah, Plain
and Tall trilogy, Caleb’s Story, so we will try to begin this week. Don’t
fall behind in the home reading of Charlotte’s Web. The novels and
completed packets must be returned by February 11.
Ø Handwriting: letters /M/ and /U/ in
cursive
