WEEK OF FEBRUARY 25 TO MARCH 1, 2013

We are always VERY BUSY and learning new things in the third grade. Our students are very active and eager, and since it is starting to get very hot, we want to remind parents to pack nutrious and hydrating snacks for our students. An over-night frozen water bottle is also a good idea!

YEARBOOK PICTURES – Please remember that our indvidual and class pictures are scheduled to be taken early in the morning on Tuesday, February 26. Order forms were sent last Friday if you wish to order any of the different sets offered, and must be returned as soon as possible.

SCIENCE FAIR IS HERE! The big day is Wednesday, February 27. On this day, our students DO NOT need to bring their backpacks (only their snack) along with their Science Fair experiment, display board and Science Fair Log and an electronic device (i.e. Kindle) or any other to keep them entertained while they await for their project to be judged. This is an early dismissal day, and the students will be returning home at 11:45. Please contact us if you have any questions.

We would like to ask for our parents’ cooperation in helping our students make a habit of practicing the MAP related websites. Sitting down and practicing for 10-15 minutes each day ensures they are working towards meeting their end of the year goals! These websites are

This week we will be working on the following:

  • Math: we will learn about equivalent fractions, compare and order fractions, estimate fractional parts of a region and identify and locate fractions on a number line. We want to remind our students to practice their facts every night!
  • Theme: our students continue their study of the “FIVE UNKNOWNS”  by testing them with iodine, red cabbage juice and heat, and recording their findings.
  • R/W Workshop: this week, our students will be working in special groupings to target areas of opportunity as shown on their MAP scores. We will be working with Interpretive Reading Comprehension and Word Analysis & Vocabulary Development. Writing activities in response to literature will be derived from these, as well as from enjoying Caleb’s Story for Read Aloud. Please do not forget to read your Beverly Cleary novel at home every night.
  • Spelling: Lesson 26 is about Holidays. The quiz will be on Friday.
  • Handwriting: letters /Y/ and /T/ in cursive.

The School Cafeteria reminds you to check their blog for the delicious food and snacks they offer. They also wish to remind parents that the preorders for March are due this Thursday 28 Feb.  To dowload the form parents should go to http://discoverycafeteria.blogspot.com/p/menus.html
