WEEK OF JANUARY 7 – 11, 2013

We hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Season and that you are ready to begin this second semester will tons of energy and enthusiasm.

We would like to welcome Isabella Teske to our third grade family! She will be joining Ms. Ashley's 3A class.

This week we will be focusing on many new and exciting things. Here is what we will be working on:
·         Math: we will be learning about remainders in division, division patterns with 10, 11 and 12, translating words to expressions, and wrapping up chapter 7. The test will be next Tuesday, January 15. We will also continue with our daily multiplication (and now division) drills.
·         Theme: We begin our new quarter with our (very much awaited) MAYAN UNIT. This week, we will be learning basic information about this magnificent civilization, watching videos and power points, and setting up our groups for the different centers.
·         R/W Workshop: This week we will begin our guided reading of Skylark by Patricia McLachland. This is the second book in the Sarah, Plain and Tall trilogy. The students will also begin working on the Descriptive Writing unit. New Novels and Packets will be sent home at the end of the week, and these will be due on Monday, February 11.
·         Spelling: lesson 19 is the /s/ sound. The quiz will be on Friday.
·         Handwriting: we begin with the upper case letters  by practicing letter /A/ in cursive this week.

Report Cards and Conferences for the Second Quarter – Report Cards will be issued this Friday, January 11. This is also an early dismissal day for our students (we will follow AM schedule). Notices for conferences will be sent home on Tuesday, and for this quarter conferences are on a need-basis.  If a conference was not requested, and you would like to meet with a teacher, please call the school as soon as you can to set up a time for Friday afternoon.

MAP TESTING – We will begin our second MAP testing session on January 22. Dates and Times for third grade will be issued next week.
