WEEK OF JANUARY 14-18, 2013

Our amazing third graders have started off 2013 with a great attitude and hard work! We have been learning ne things, and we are all excited about what is to come. This week we will be working on the following:

·         Math: we will be reviewing the division concepts in chapter 7 on Monday, and have the chapter test on Tuesday. On Wednesday we will begin our unit on Geometry by exploring solid figures and their relationships to shapes. We will continue with our daily multiplication and division drills every day.  This week we will be setting up another trial membership in IXL to provide our students with the opportunity to practice both division and geometry concepts. We will send the user name and password home as soon as it is done.
·         R/W Workshop: we are enjoying our guided reading, class discussions and reflections on Skylark. This week we will be reading and discussing chapters 7-14 in class.  Home novels were distributed last Friday. Our novel for the month of January is Charlotte's Web by E.B. White.
·         Theme: the students are incredibly excited about the Mayan Unit. This week they will begin their teamwork, working on different stations every day in which they will learn about different aspects of the Mayan civilization (i.e. Religion, Food and Farming, Society, etc) They will be earning daily points.
·         Spelling; this week’s lesson is about the /j/ sound. The quiz will be on Friday.
·         Handwriting: letter A, C, E in cursive

The DPTO is organizing an assembly for Friday, January 18 to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day (observed on Monday). The assembly will begin at 8:00 am, and parents are welcome to attend.

MULTIPLICATION EXPERT AWARD – We would like to give our third graders the opportunity to demonstrate their profficiency in the multiplication facts. On Wednesdays and Fridays they will have the chance to complete a 50-problem sheet in three minutes with a 90% accuracy. When they do, their names will be posted in an MULTIPLICATION EXPERT AWARD display in class. When everyone’s name is on the chart, we will have a party!
