WEEK OF NOVEMBER 19 – 23, 2013
It is hard to believe we are at the middle of the second
quarter! Mid Term Progress Reports for the second quarter will be sent home this
Wednesday. Please go over them carefully, and if you would like a conference
and one is not being asked for, please contact the teacher as soon as you can.
Our third graders have been very excited about the IXL
program. We want to remind parents that they can use their IXL accounts to
practice at home, as well as using their mutliplication charts and the
“cheating sticks” that we made last Thursday. Please make sure that your third
grader is practicing the facts every night, especially those they are having
trouble remembering. Jingles and tricks are fun, but we are now focusing on
speed and accuracy! The use of the IXL program at home (which we monitor by
checking daily to see how many medals each student is earning) will determine if we
want to proceed in acquiring a full time membership once the trial status
expires on December 7.
THANKSGIVING LUNCH
– Every third grader MUST bring the
slip we sent home last Wednesday indicating how many adult and child plates
will be ordered per family, along with the money for them, on Monday,
November 19. Please also tell us your preference of pie (lemon or apple). We
will have our lunch in the third grade area at 12:10.
This is a short week! Here is what we will be working on:
- Math: using multiplication to compare, multiplying 3 factors, and finding a rule.
- Theme: we will test the minerals for their ability to transmit light, and for their luster.
- R/W Workshop: Novels and packets are due Monday, November 19, and new novels and packets will be distributed on this day. The third graders will be finishing their Sarah, Plain and Tall class projects. We will also be learning about the use of quotations, and cause & effect relationships.
- Spelling: Since this is a short week we will devoting this time to reading “Time For Kids” articles,
- Handwriting: letter /o/ in cursive.
WHAT A GREAT
WAY TO TEACH OUR THIRD GRADERS TO BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT THEY HAVE: The NPH
Giving Tree- Nuestros
Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) is an international organization that takes in
abandoned and orphaned children, providing a home and education.
Discovery School teachers have played an important role in visiting a group of
children from the orphanage for more than 7 years, and this year will hope to
provide shoes and socks for each of these children. A giving tree has
been set up on the second floor of the secondary building. Tree tags
have the children's size information. Items need to be returned to school by
Tuesday, December 4. For more information, see Mrs. Christina Agurcia. For more information
about NPH’s work in Honduras, please visit http://www.nph-honduras.org/.
