WEEK OF OCTOBER 22 – 26, 2012
This will be an exciting week at Discovery School. We have
two very important events going on:
Our traditional UN DAY celebration takes place
on Thursday, October 25. The celebration starts at 8:30 a.m. We hope you will
be able to join us as the school showcases our multicultural richness.
On Friday, October 26 we have Student Led Conferences at
school. On this day, Report Cards and MAP Reports will be given
out. A note with the time for each third grader’s conference will be sent out
on Monday. Since the conferences are student led, parents need to bring their
third grader with them.
This week, our third graders will be working on the
following:
ü
Math:
we will be learning the multiplication facts using 2, 5 and 10 as factors. More
than rote memorization, at this time we will focus on the patterns and
strategies to learn these tables.
ü
Theme:
we will use latitude and longitude lines to find places on a map, and learn
about physical and land features.
ü
Spelling:
there will be NO spelling lesson for this week. This time will be used for Goal
Setting Conferences with the students.
ü
R/W
Workshop: we will FINALLY be finishing The Witches for read aloud, getting
ready to watch the movie next Wednesday. We remind parents that they need to
read the document to the right on this blog for more information about the
movie, and whether they will allow their child to watch it. The students will
continue working on their independent reading and writing, and reading TIME FOR
KIDS articles.
ü
Handwriting:
there will be NO new letters introduced this week. We will use this time to
learn about the United Nations.
BOOK CHARACTER DAY – Please
send in the forms that were sent home last week. Book Character Day is next
Wednesday, October 31. The students may choose to dress as a character from a
book they have read, and that it was a book before it became a movie. If
you have misplaced the form, simply write down on a piece of paper what
character has been chosen, the name of the book, and the reason for the choice.
