WEEK OF OCTOBER 15 – 19, 2012

We hope you all had a relaxing and fun 4-day weekend. Since this week marks the beginning of our second quarter in third grade, we will be starting new units in Math and Theme. We want to remind parents that last week’s Math test was sent home on Thursday, and must be signed and returned as soon as possible.

This is what we will be working on this week:

  • Math: we begin our much awaited and anticipated unit of MULTIPLICATION! We will focus on writing multiplication sentences for repeated addition, for arrays, writing multiplication stories and making a table. AN IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PARENTS: At this point, we are focusing on the students understanding the operation and the patterns that will be observed in the multiplication tables rather than rote memorization and speed. These will be targeted later on.
  • Theme: we will begin our Social Studies unit on MAPS AND GEOGRAPHY by learning about the Globe, its Hemispheres, the Oceans and the Continents.
  • R/W Workshop: we continue working on Narrative writing (our students will learn a different pre-writing strategy and produce another writing piece). They will continue with independent self-selected reading based on their individual Lexile scores. We will hopefully be able to finish The Witches for Read Aloud, and plan to watch the movie on Character Day. Parents only: please check the document to the right of this blog titled “The Witches – Links” to preview the movie for your approval. A reminder that Novels and Packets are due on Tuesday, October 16. This week, the children can have free reading at home as their daily reading assignment.
  • Spelling: lesson 10 is about double consonants. The quiz will be on Friday.
  • Theme Skits –during Handwriting time, the third graders will be using their flower and bee models to create a skit for their reading buddies to explain the process of pollination, and the parts of the bee and flower.

ELEMENTARY PARENT LUNCHEON: Our School Cafeteria will be hosting their first Parent Luncheon for Elementary parents and students on Friday, October 19. Pre-order forms with the menu and prices will be sent home on Monday.
