WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 17 – 21, 2012

We hope you all had a fun, relaxing and restful 4-day Independence Day weekend. We have recharged our batteries and are now ready for more learning in third grade.

Our third graders had a great time last Thursday in the Independence Day Celebration, and enjoyed a delicious breakfast/snack thanks to our wonderful parents. Thanks for sending in such tasty treats, and special thanks to the parents who came in to help us serve (and enjoy) the food!

We start our first MAP testing session this week. The third graders will be taking their Math MAP tests this Wednesday, September 19. We have been talking about the importance of MAP testing in class. Please remind your child to do their best in these assessments. Teachers use the results to plan instruction and better meet all our students’ needs.

This week our third graders will be working on:

Ø      Math: we will be finishing chapter 1 this week working on problem solving and reviewing the concepts taught. The test will be this Friday, September 21.
Ø      Theme: the third graders will be planting their quads with the Wisconsin Fast Growing Plants. They will be learning the different parts of a plant, the purpose of thinning and transplanting, and measuring the plant’s growth.
Ø      R/W Workshop: we have finished the guided reading for The Hundred Dresses, and this week we will be working on different response to literature activities. We will also continue to enjoy our class read aloud of The Witches.
Ø      Spelling: lesson 5 is about the /oo/ sound. The quiz will be on Friday.
Ø      Handwriting: this week we will be practicing letter /j/ in cursive

This Friday, September 21 the Seniors will be offering games and activities to celebrate Dia Del Niño during lunch time. If you have not done so, please send in the L50 that were requested as a cover charge for this activity.

NUTRITION TALK TO OUR DISCOVERY SCHOOL PARENTS: Organized by Ms. Erika Corletto and sponsored by Pediasure. This talk will be offered by Eda Flefil, a nutritionist that will be talking about the benefits of a well balanced diet. Please join us on Friday, September 21 at 2:30 p.m. in our school library.
