WEEK OF APRIL 8 – 12,
2013
Our third graders are having a great time learning new
things in class. They are busy with different and exciting activities, and
showing outstanding effort and dedication! Here is what we will be working on
this week:
·
Math:
we will add and subtract decimals, works with the “make an organized list”
strategy, and estimate and measure length in centimeters and meters.
·
Science: we
will describe the sounds made by the vibrations of a ruler, comparing and
describing the frequency in different lengths of a ruler, and experiment with
the pitch of a whistle.
·
R/W
Workshop: we will continue reading the biographies of Louis Braille and
Thomas Alva Edison in our different reading groups. We are focusing on vocabulary development
while reading in class, as well as responding to this literary genre. Don’t fall behind on the reading of your
Beverly Cleary home novel. It is due on May 3.
·
Spelling:
lesson 28 is about contractions. The quiz will be on Friday, April 12.
·
Handwriting:
letters /Q/ and /Z/ in cursive
Starting Monday, our third graders need to choose whether
to practice their MAP or IXL skills. After practicing, a parent
must initial the chart that has been pasted in the Take Home Folder. We will
once again be giving awards and prizes at the end of this month to those who
have 3 or more practices per week. Once
again, the websites are:
FRACTION PIZZA
FIELDTRIP – To relate fractions to decimals, we are planning a fieldtrip to
the supermarket for next week. The purpose is for our third graders to prepare
a budget, buy the ingredients for a pizza, make it, and then answer questions
related to it. Of course, each group will enjoy their pizza (and drinks) for
lunch that day. We need 6 chaperones for
this less-than-two-hour fieldtrip. If you can spare time from 8:00-9:45 am
please let us know.
The school is currently organizing three important upcomming events. The
DPTO RUN RUN AND OLYMPIC GAMES and a
school BINGO are being put together
to raise funds towards buying TECHONOLOGY for the school The DPTO is
also oraganizing their annual GARAGE
SALE. Please check the Administration
Blog for this week’s Monday Memo for more information. Our parents' help is much needed and greatly appreciated in making these events a success!
