WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 3 – 7, 2012

Can you believe September is already here? WOW! Our 3rd graders will have an important part in the Flag Day Assembly scheduled for Monday, September 3 at 8:00a.m. Please make sure they wear white and blue (preferably a Honduran Team shirt). This month is filled with important events and dates, so please take note of what is published in our blog.

This is a short week for our 3rd graders. Here is what we will be covering the three school days this week:

v  Math: we will be rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred, working with problem solving strategies, and work with the values of coins and bills (money).
v  Theme: after many activities and reflections about the character traits we have been studying in our Civics unit, the third graders will be working in groups to plan and make a poster board about a character trait of their choice, and they will be posting it in our school campus.
v  R/W Workshop:  This week our students will be finishing their second creative story as part of the writing workshop. We will begin our first Guided Reading novel (to be read in class as a group reading). We will read The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes.  And, of course, we will continue to enjoy The Witches for Read Aloud.  Every 3rd grader should be reading their novel at home, and begin working on the packet when they finish their reading. Novels and packets are due back in school on Tuesday, September 18 (and before then, if possible!)
v  Spelling: lesson 4 teaches patters for the spelling of long /e/ and /1/ sounds. Since this is short week, we will have the Spelling test until next Wednesday (Sept. 18.
v  Handwriting: letter /u/ in cursive.

DPTO MEETING THIS WEEK - The Discovery Parent Teacher Organization is holding its first meeting on Wednesday, September 5 from 7:30am to 8:15am.  The agenda items include: general information about the DPTO, activities for the school year, budget, and organizing the United Nations Day.  A light
morning snack will be provided. Please include this information in your blog posts for this week!

MAP Teacher Training
There will be NO school for grades Nursery to Grade 5 on Thursday and Friday, September 6 and 7. Our teachers are making the necessary accommodations in the delivery of the curriculum to make sure that this does not affect the instruction of our students. As only a few of the secondary teachers will attend the training,                    the Middle and High School students will have classes as normal on Thursday and Friday, September 6 and 7. We thank our parents for their support and understanding in this matter, and encourage anyone who has a question to email our Head of School atdebgilespk@yahoo.com

HELP NEEDED – we need a parent volunteer from each 3rd grade class to help organize the Desayuno Tipico for the 3rd grade class on Thursday, September 13.  If you are interested in helping out, please contact Ms. Ashley and/or Ms. Cristiana as soon as possible.
