WEEK OF AUGUST 20-24, 2012

We want to thank all the parents that came to our Open House last Thursday morning, and those who contacted us if they could not attend. We truly feel confident that with this class’ level of parental involvement and support we will have an extremely successful school year.

We also want to take this opportunity to give a bif THANKS to all the parents who are making an extra effort to get the third graders to school on time. Being on time and prepared for us to start instruction promptly at 8:00 a.m. sets a tone for a successful school day.

This week our third graders will be very busy working on the following:

Ø      Math: we will begin the Place Value Unit by learning about the ways we use numbers, writing numbers in three different ways (expanded, standard and word form), writing and reading large numbers, and place value up to the hundred thousands place.
Ø      Theme:  After working last week on the rights and responsibilities, rewards and consequences for the third grade, this week we focus on Citizenship and Character Development by learning about different traits. This week we will do activities about citizenship, responsibility, respect and trustworthiness.
Ø      Spelling: lesson 2 is about the short vowel sounds /e/. /i/ and /u/. The quiz will be on Friday.
Ø      Handwriting: letters /h/ and /k/ in cursive.
Ø      R/W Workshop: Our first novels to be read at home will be handed out on Monday. Each third grader should be reading this novel every night, and work on the activity packet after they have finished the reading. Novels and packets are due back on Thursday, September 13. In class, the third grade students will be filling out their first story web for a creative story, and going through the steps in the writing process to write a story of their own. They will also be choosing their independent reading selections from the class Scholastic Guided Reading sets, which will match their reading Lexile. Of course, we will continue to enjoy our class read aloud of Roald Dahl’s The Witches.
ECOFRIENDLY LUNCH DAY - will be held on Friday, August 24th.  Students and teachers  need to bring a waste free lunch!  For ideas on how to pack a waste free lunch visit http://www.wastefreelunches.org/.
